I collaborated with author Larry Westerman to bring his decade-long research project, ‘In the Realm of the Aging Senses’, to life by creating 94 original hand-drawn illustrations that explain how our senses evolve as we grow older — from changes in sight and hearing to the humor, challenges, and wisdom that come with aging.
My goal was to make complex ideas more accessible, relatable, and infused with a touch of humor. Each drawing was designed to add warmth, levity, and clarity to Larry’s insights, finding the balance between educational content and the human connection.
The illustration style was built around playful, doodle-inspired line work that supports both scientific explanation and storytelling. Every drawing was created by hand to maintain a sense of character and authenticity that AI-generated imagery can’t replicate. The 94 illustrations include:
Throughout the book, these visuals help guide readers through the material, making the content easier to digest while reinforcing the emotional themes at the heart of the research, embracing aging not as decline, but as a rich, evolving part of the human experience. The result is a deeply personal, visually rich narrative that redefines how we talk about aging.
Every project tells a story — see how I help clients transform their ideas into successful designs that work like magic.
